Figures are scaled from Sustainability Victoria's own heating and cooling benchmarks for an average, pre-2005 Melbourne-climate home. Real running costs depend on insulation, glazing, ceiling height, draughts, occupancy, and the specific system installed — this tool is for comparing options, not replacing a proper site assessment.

Methodology
How these estimates work
The seasonal dollar figures behind this calculator come directly from Sustainability Victoria's published heating and cooling running-cost benchmarks for an average existing Melbourne-climate home, across a range of system efficiencies (that's why every result is shown as a range, not one number). This tool then reprices those figures at the electricity and gas rates you enter — prefilled with the current Victorian Default Offer rate for the Mornington Peninsula's electricity network, and a representative current Victorian gas usage rate — and scales them by roughly how many hours a day the system runs in season. Reverse-cycle systems get their efficiency from a heat-pump COP typically in the order of 3-6 (energy.gov.au); gas ducted systems from typical burner input and AS4556 combustion efficiency; portable electric heaters are simple resistive elements, so all input power converts to heat.
Single split systems and portable heaters only condition one living zone, not the whole home, so their figures are scaled to a smaller area than a whole-home ducted or multi-split system — the calculator notes this whenever it applies.
