Ducted Heating Replacement

Ducted heating replacement on the Mornington Peninsula.

When an older ducted heater is past its best, the decision is rarely just about the unit. It is about whether to replace like for like or move to a system that also cools, and what the existing ducts can still do. Hyde helps homeowners across the Peninsula make that call with the whole system in view.

What Peninsula customers say

We recently had Hyde Heating and Cooling replace two ageing ducted systems in our home and install AirTouch 5 zoning.

This is the second time we have used Hyde Heating and am very confident in recommending them.

I called in the morning and they came out that afternoon - service was fantastic, they are the only AC and heating company I will ever use down on the peninsula.

Signs it is time to replace, not repair

  • The unit is well into its working life. Most gas ducted heaters are built to last roughly fifteen to twenty years, and age matters most when read alongside condition and service history
  • Repeat call-outs for different faults, which usually means components are starting to fail in sequence rather than one at a time
  • Fault codes that keep returning after a service, or a burner that will not stay lit reliably
  • Gas bills rising without any change in how the home is used
  • Cold spots, or a heater that runs constantly without reaching the set temperature
  • A repair quote that is starting to feel close to the cost of a new unit

What a replacement involves

  • Site visit to look at the existing heater, ducts, return air, outlets and controls
  • Sizing for the home as it is used today, not just matching the old unit
  • Duct check to decide what can stay, what needs repair and what should be replaced
  • Removal and, where relevant, proper decommissioning of the old unit by licensed trades
  • Installation of the new heater or reverse-cycle system, with gas work carried out by a licensed gasfitter
  • Commissioning and testing through the full range of outlets before handover

Path one

Like-for-like gas ducted replacement

A new gas ducted heater connected to ducts that are still in good condition is the smaller job. It can suit a home that already has cooling it is happy with, where heating alone is the priority. It keeps the home on gas, and the gas work is carried out by a licensed gasfitter. See the gas ducted heating page for more on servicing and replacing gas systems.

Path two

Move to reverse-cycle ducted

Reverse-cycle ducted heats in winter and cools in summer from the same ducts and outlets, so a replacement can also close the cooling gap that many gas ducted homes still have. It may need duct changes, and it involves electrical work that a gas heater did not. The reverse-cycle ducted page and the guide to replacing gas ducted heating with reverse cycle cover the trade-offs in more detail.

Can the existing ducts be reused?

Sometimes. Ducts are part of the system design, so reuse depends on their physical condition, insulation, and whether the zoning still matches how the home is used. Reuse can save cost and disruption, but it can also preserve the exact problems the replacement was meant to fix. Hyde inspects the ducts before saying either way. Read can existing ducts be reused in a ducted replacement for what has to be true before reuse is a good idea.

Timing the replacement

If the heater is ageing but still running, replacing it outside winter avoids being without heat and avoids waiting in the queue when everyone else's heater fails. A straightforward gas swap that reuses the ducts is usually a one-day job, while a full reverse-cycle changeover with new ductwork is typically staged over more than one day. If the heater has already stopped, start with urgent heater repairs and talk through the replacement afterwards.

Cost and VEU

Cost depends on the path chosen, whether the ducts can be reused, the size of the home, access and any electrical work. The guide to ducted heating replacement costs and what is involved sets out the indicative ranges and the factors that move them. Replacing an older gas ducted system with reverse-cycle ducted may be eligible for Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts, and Hyde can check eligibility. See the VEU upgrades page for how the program is handled.

Talk it through before winter

A site visit is the quickest way to know whether the existing ducts and layout can stay, and which path suits the home. Booking outside the cold months means no rush and no stretch without heat.

FAQs

Questions homeowners ask before replacing ducted heating.

How do I know if my ducted heater needs replacing rather than repairing?

Age, repeat faults, returning fault codes, rising running costs and uneven heating are the main signals. One isolated fault on an otherwise reliable heater is usually a repair. A pattern of call-outs across different parts is more often a replacement conversation. Hyde can look at the system and give a clear repair-versus-replace view.

Can I replace my gas ducted heater with another gas ducted heater?

Yes. A like-for-like gas replacement can suit homes where the ducts and zoning are in good condition and heating alone is the priority. It keeps the home on gas, so it is worth weighing against reverse-cycle ducted before deciding.

Can I switch from gas ducted heating to reverse-cycle ducted?

Often, yes. Reverse-cycle ducted heats and cools through the same ducts and outlets. Switching can require duct changes because sizing, insulation and return air can differ between the two systems, so it comes down to an inspection.

Can my existing ducts be reused?

Sometimes. Reuse depends on the condition of the ducts, whether the zoning still suits how the home is used and whether the new system's airflow can work with the existing layout. Hyde does not promise reuse before the ducts have been inspected.

When is the best time to replace ducted heating?

Outside the cold months where possible. Replacing in autumn or earlier means you are not without heat, and not competing with winter demand for a time slot. If the heater has already failed in winter, Hyde will talk through the options and realistic timing.

Can a ducted heating replacement attract a VEU discount?

It may. Replacing an older gas ducted system with an efficient reverse-cycle system may be eligible for Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts, depending on the current system, the property and the upgrade. Hyde can check eligibility before you commit to a path.
